Kahala Beaches

Kahala Parks

Kahala beach is a little less than one mile in length. The beach runs along the back side of the Kahala Oceanfront homes starting at Hunakai and terminating at the Kahala Hotel. Kahala beach patrons include sunbathers, snorklers and spear fishermen. Although just minutes from the jam-packed beaches of Waikiki, Kahala beach rarely sees a big crowd.

Kai Nani is a small neighborhood at the eastern end of Waialae Golf Course. Most of the homes in Kai Nani are either on the golf course or direct ocean front. Homes tend to hold their value in Kai Nani simply because of location and lack of inventory. With just over 30 homes in the neighborhood, the majority of home-owners occupy their homes year round bringing a noticeable pride of ownership to the neighborhood. Local homeowners who own property on the mountain side of Kalanianaole Highway diligently watch this neighborhood for years in some cases, waiting for an opportunity to purchase in Kai Nani.

Kai Nani Beaches

Kai Nani Neighborhood Features

Just 10 of the 30+ homes in Kai Nani are direct oceanfront homes. There is a small strip of beach in front of the homes. Because there are no public beach right-of-ways in the Kai Nani neighborhood, the beach is usually empty.

Once a year, this neighborhood becomes the back door to the Sony Open in Hawaii. Homeowners get to view the PGA action right from their back decks.

The reef in front of Kai Nani is shallow and extends a few hundred yards beyond the shoreline. This creates some fairly calm inshore waters.

Wailupe Beach is a small neighborhood of about 23 homes.  Over 90% of the homes in the Wailupe Beach neighborhood are direct oceanfront, with sandy beach access.  Wailupe beach homeowners can watch the sun come up over Koko Head, and set over Diamond Head.

Wailupe Beach neighborhood facts

• The world famous Honolulu Marathon route passes directly by the Wailupe Beach neighborhood once a year.

• The largest private lot in Wailupe Beach is just over 33,000 square feet.

Wailupe Beach is about a half mile in length running along the back side of the oceanfront residences that make up the Wailupe Beach neighborhood.  The beach is narrow with a mixture of sand and small pebbles.  The inshore waters are calm and shallow, protected by a reef a few hundred yards off shore.  Lack of public access to Wailupe Beach makes it relatively unused, with the exception of the occassional fisherman walking around in the shallow inshore waters.

The State of Hawaii owns a 66,000 square foot lot on the east end of the Wailupe Beach neighborhood.  The land is open to the public as Wailupe Beach Park.  The waters directly in front of the park are shallow and rocky, making it suitable for not much more than fishing and surfing beyond the reef.

• The Wailupe Peninsula is an anceint Hawaiian fishpond that was filled in the mid 1940s using the coral and fill from the dredging of the boat channel which now outlines the Peninsula.

Aina Haina beach itself gets very little public use, though the surf breaks a couple hundred yards offshore are frequently used by local surfers and windsurfers.

Aina Haina got it's name from Robert Hind, the owner of Hind-Clarke dairy in the 1920s.

Aina = Land
Haina = Hind... hence Hind's Land.

Kawaikui Beach Park is an oceanfront park that separates the Aina Haina Beach and Niu Beach residential communities. Wedding Ceremonies are sometimes held at Kawaikui Beach Park.

The Niu Beach neighborhood continues along Kalanianaole Hwy just east of Kawaikui park to Paiko Lagoon.  The oceanfront homes in Niu Beach cover the gamet, from modern-elegant to bali-hawaii fusion.  There are approximately 60 oceanfront homes in the Niu Beach neighborhood.  Like Wailupe, a number of the homes are beachfront, and a few homes are direct oceanfront with no beach but private boat docks.

Niu beach is a little wider at certain areas than it's nearby Aina Haina neighboring beaches.  With no public access, the beach is very rarely used except by those willing to wade through the inshore waters to access the beach from Kawaikui park.  The waters just off-shore are calm and shallow with a mixture of sand and reef.

Kawaikui Beach Park is an oceanfront park that separates the Aina Haina Beach and Niu Beach residential communities.  Wedding Ceremonies are sometimes held at Kawaikui Beach Park.

Paiko Lagoon is the last residential oceanside neighborhood along eastbound Kalanianaole Highway prior to entering Hawaii Kai.  Paiko Lagoon and the surrounding water is a Wildlife Sanctuary partially protected under the US Marine Protected Areas (MPA).  There are only 20 direct oceanfront homes in the Paiko Lagoon neighborhood, and another two dozen waterfront homes on the lagoon itself. Paiko Drive is the oceanfront road in Paiko Lagoon, and Summer Street is the main road that runs along the lagoon.

Paiko Lagoon Beaches

Paiko Lagoon Parks

Paiko beach runs along the back of the oceanfront homes on Paiko Drive.  The beach is narrow in most places, with shallow near shore waters.  There is a beach access near the Paiko State Land Reserve at the end of the road, though the beach is somewhat secluded as there are other more accessible beaches and beach parks just a short drive away.

Kuliouou Beach Park is just east of the Paiko Wildlife Reserve.  Families gather here on the weekends to picnic and barbeque.  The inshore waters are shallow, exposing the sandy mudflats at low tide.  At high tide, there is enough clearance to put a kayak in the water and paddle around.

Maunalua Bay Beach Park is a more visible park just off of Kalanianaole Highway.  There is a boat ramp which is frequently used, especially on the weekends.

Portlock road is sometimes referred to as the Kahala avenue of East Oahu.  The homes along Portlock road are some of the most luxurious in Hawaii Kai.  Perhaps the most well known estate on Portlock Road is the Henry J. Kaiser estate, an oceanfront estate with more than 5 acres of land.  The oceanfront homes on Portlock Road have direct ocean access as they are built just above sea level.  There is a small strip of beach at the beginning of Portlock Road.

Portlock Beaches

Portlock Parks

There is a narrow beach that runs along the back side of the oceanfront homes in Portlock.  The beach starts just across the boat channel from Maunalua Bay Beach Park, and runs for a few hundred yards towards the point.  Lack of beach access makes this a rarely visited beach.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is just a short distance from the Portlock neighborhood.  Hanauma Bay is a popular tourist spot for snorkeling and swimming.  The beach at Hanauma Bay is large, though often times crowded.

Sandy Beach is also a short drive from the Portlock neighborhood.  As the name would indicate, there is a large sandy beach at the popular beach park.  Surfers, body boarders, body surfers, swimmer, and other ocean enthusiast frequent this beach on both the weekdays and the weekends.

Maunalua Bay Beach Park is a visible park just off of Kalanianaole Highway.  There is a boat ramp which is frequently used, especially on the weekends.

Koko Head Regional Park is best known as the starting point for the Koko Head hike which takes you up a steep 1200 foot incline to an old WWII bunker and an incredible viewpoint over all of Hawaii Kai and the eastern end of the Island.

On the eastern point of Maunalua Bay sits the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of Koko Kai.  The homes in Koko Kai typically offer amazing ocean & sunset views towards Diamond Head.  Koko Kai homes are valued at over a million dollars, with oceanfront homes well into the multi-million category.  There are only 25 oceanfront parcels in the Koko Kai neighborhood.
